This article addresses accumulating multiple traffic citations in Israel (or accumulating multiple traffic tickets in Israel). Israeli regulations around traffic and transportation are overseen by the Ministry of Transport and Road Safety.

Israel’s Traffic Citation System (Israel’s Traffic Ticket System)

In Israel, it is important to avoid accruing multiple traffic citations (also known as tickets) in a short period of time because the different offenses will not only be treated in isolation, they will also have a compounding effect. This is because of the point system which is used by the traffic authorities in Israel. Multiple Traffic Citations in Israel

Israel has a system of traffic violation points in which each serious violation causes a certain number of points to be counted against the driver. The points last for two years from the time of the offense, unless the driver already had more than 20 points against them, in which case they last for 4 years.

Following is a non-exhaustive list of some common examples of traffic violations and the number of points they incur against the driver:

2 points – Driving with a passenger that is not wearing a seatbelt

4 points – Not stopping fully at a stop sign; Using a mobile phone while driving

6 points – Driving without wearing a seatbelt; Reckless or careless driving

8 points – Driving more than 25 KMpH above the speed limit;

10 points – Driving through a red traffic light; Driving with a suspended license; driving under intoxication (DUI)

The consequences for accumulating a certain number of points are as follows:

If a driver accumulates 12 points or more, they will be required to take a “basic proper driving course” followed by a final exam.

If they accumulate 22 points or more, they will also be required to take an “advanced proper driving course” followed by an exam.

If they accumulate 36 points or more, their license will also be suspended for 3 months.

If they accumulate 72 points, or 36 points for a second time in the span of 6 years, their license will be suspended for 9 months, at the end of which they will have to retake their driver’s test and driver’s theory test in order to have their license renewed.

If you have been issued a traffic citation that will cause points to be counted against you, you are able to appeal the citation by requesting a court trial. We recommend that you hire an experienced traffic lawyer to represent you in that case. See our tips on choosing the best Israeli traffic lawyer for your case.
