What is notary translation?

A notary is an experienced attorney, authorized by the Ministry of Justice to verify signatures on documents, certify the accuracy of a translation and/or a translator’s declaration regarding the accuracy of the translation, and more. Many documents that are translated into another language and submitted to authorities and offices outside of the country where they were produced require notarized translation, including certain medical documents.

If you thought that there is usually no need for notarized translation for these type of documents – you are correct when the documents are to be presented to attending physician, but mistaken if the documents are to be presented to official authorities for purposes of immigration, receiving benefits, and more. A medical history, treatment summary, list of medications in use, medical opinion, and the like, can be translated without notarization (although you must ensure the quality and accuracy of the translation, because your health and life may depend on it). However, in order to prove that you are fit to perform a certain job, do not have a mental or physical illness that prevents you from immigrating to a certain country, or are eligible for assistance from the authorities due to a chronic health issue – you must present an officially verified document in the language of the country in which the document is being submitted.

Why is there a need for urgent translation of medical documents?

The Coronavirus pandemic has brought with it a new reality, in which routine procedures become mandatory instructions and guidelines, which may lead to restrictions in some cases, and even sanctions in others. In order to travel internationally you are required to present proof of vaccinations, tests administered in the preceding few days, or a specific reason why you cannot perform a test despite an urgent need to travel abroad.

Translating medical documents subject to notarization is critical not only in order to prove your eligibility for various stipends and disability pensions provided by the state and National Insurance. Notarization of documents is also required for medical emergencies and for entering and leaving Israel and other countries, whether for an emergency trip during a lockdown, proving a current medical condition, immigration, etc.

At present, most countries require a person seeking entrance to present documents verifying their medical condition, in order to protect the country’s public health. This applies to air travel as well as crossing marine or land borders, including the European Union countries, the United States, and other countries. In the future these procedures will undoubtedly become mandatory, so the service of verifying medical documents rapidly and accurately is more vital today than ever.

As of March 2021, entrance to the USA requires documentation that supports and/or justifies not having a Covid test and/or vaccinations, based on up-to-date medical records. Any application for a humanitarian exemption under the current circumstances requires the applicant’s willingness to verify medical documents translated into English, to prove that the document is valid in Israel.

Translation of medical documents poses more difficulty than some other types of documents, certainly if you need translations of your vaccination records in order to prove that you or your children have received specific current vaccines, or if you need to declare severe allergies to certain substances that may prevent you from receiving certain vaccines. Translating medical documents regarding mental health

In addition to physical health, there is often a need for translating documents that indicate the state of a person’s mental health. For instance, one must pass a psychiatric evaluation in order to be accepted to sensitive positions in the army or the defense industry, or even to participate in international projects of the defense industry.

People with a criminal background who wish to immigrate to a different country are required to present an opinion (or several opinions) proving that their actions represented a one-time lapse, and that after rehabilitation they are not expected to return to their criminal ways and thus pose a threat to the general public.

Submitting medical documents from a foreign country to Israel, and Israeli documents in a foreign country

The collection of medical documents from a foreign country usually require translation and verification by a government authority and/or a service provider which has received government authorization to do so, as well as an apostille stamp.
