What to Do if in a Hit and Run in Israel

Israeli law prevents people from filing a claim against a third party if 1) the offending party has escaped, 2) you can not find them, 3) or if the offending party does not have obligatory insurance. However, there is a special fund to help victims of hit-and-run accidents. This fund is called Karnit, and it acts as a replacement for the insurance company.

If you are in a hit and run in Israel, you should do the following:

Call an ambulance or seek medical assistance if needed.
Make sure you document the incident, obtaining additional information from the surrounding car, pedestrian, or security cameras.
Write a list of everything you know about the offending vehicle. This includes the car license number, the color of the car, the make of the vehicle, and anything else of relevance.
Make a list of witnesses who saw the incident.
Go to a police station in person and file a complaint as soon as you can.

The Karnit fund only makes a payment if the event is indeed deemed a hit and run. In order to assess this, the fund may send an investigator to meet with the victim of the hit and run to ascertain the particulars of the case and ensure the victim does not really know the identity of the offending party.
