This article addresses driving with an out-of-date license in Israel. All issues regarding driver’s licenses and regulations are under the authority of the Ministry of Transport and Road Safety,

Renewing a Driver’s License

The authorities in Israel require all drivers to periodically renew their driving license. New drivers need to renew their license after six months, then after two years, and thereafter, every ten years. In certain circumstances, such as in the case of elderly drivers, the license will need to be renewed more often and will require a medical examination. Driving a vehicle when one’s license has expired is considered an illegal and negligent act.

Consequences for Driving with an Out-of-Date License in Israel

The consequences of being caught driving with an out-of-date license in Israel very much depend on how much time has passed since it had to be renewed. If it has been less than half a year then the likely penalty is a simple 250 NIS fine with no court appearance requirement. However, if it has been more than half a year, the offender will be summoned to traffic court and may be required to take a “proper driving course” as well as pay additional fines and perhaps face additional consequences. If it has been more than two years since the license has expired, then the offender will probably also be required to retake their driving test.

Caught Driving with an Expired License

If you have been caught driving with an out-of-date license and have been summoned to court, you should make sure that your license is properly renewed prior to your court appearance, which is essential in order to appeal for a reduced sentence. Moreover, we recommend that you contact an experienced traffic lawyer to represent your case and advise you on how to proceed.
