This article addresses causing a car accident in Israel.  All issues related to car accidents fall under the Ministry of Transport and Road Safety.

What to Do After Causing a Car Accident in Israel

If you have caused a car accident, first check if you or the other party are hurt.  If so, call for assistance.  As a reminder, the number for an ambulance is 101, fire is 102, and the police is 100.  If you do need to go to the emergency room, it is essential that you document why you are doing so, and it is advisable to evacuate the site by ambulance if you are hurt (even if it is self-inflicted).

Causing a Car Accident in IsraelWhen you are discharged from the emergency room, you will receive paperwork, and you need to make sure that this paperwork includes the reason you were evacuated from the accident site. You also need to document any pain you have when the event happens and in the days following the accident. These actions have insurance ramifications, which is why we recommend this careful documentation.

Documenting the consequences of the accident

It’s also important to photograph the accident, including taking a picture of the accident, any close-up damage, and photos from farther away to see the place that it happened.  The photo from farther away should include a recognizable object, such as a sign or bridge, to name a few.

Make sure you take a picture of the other party’s license, insurance certificate, and ID or driver’s license so you and your insurance can follow up with them later.

If your accident occurred during work hours and you were injured, this can be the basis of a claim for national insurance.

We strongly recommend that you do not sign any statements saying you are guilty, even if you caused the accident.

Finally, we strongly recommend that you contact a traffic lawyer.  The sooner you contact a lawyer, the better they will be able to help you, whether you caused the accident or not.  The lawyer can advise you on what to say and how to take the smartest course of action.
