This article, “Ben Mehagrim Military Service Exemption,” provides you with practical information that will be helpful to you. As we have discussed in other articles in this ben mehagrim series, settling issues related to ben mehagrim should be done at the Israeli consulate closest to your location.

Ben Mehagrim Status

Ben mehagrim refers to the child of an Israeli citizen who, at one point, was a resident of Israel, but later left the country with their Israeli parent or legal guardian prior to the age of 16.

Ben Mehagrim Military Service Exemption

When an Israeli citizen who lives abroad is 17 years old, he or she must report to the Israeli consulate in order to register for their mandatory military service. If they are ben mehagrim, then they can defer their national service as long as they are living abroad. It is important to establish the status of ben mehagrim, otherwise, if this child who has grown up abroad tries to come to Israel, they will be considered absent without leave and can face a trial or time in prison.

Ben Mehagrim Military Service Exemption

There are a few cases where ben mehagrim can be exempt from military service. These include Israeli citizens who are living abroad and return to Israel after the age of 22 or citizens who have at least one child (regardless of gender).

If a ben mehagrim is not required to serve in the military but wishes to do so, they may volunteer for military service so long as they are under the age of 27.
