Austrian Citizenship for Descendants of Austrian Jews

This article will address obtaining Austrian citizenship for descendants of Austrian Jews. Israeli news has been covering this issue for some time now, and our law office is actively working with clients to help them with this process.

Why Should I Be Interested in Citizenship from Austria?

Obtaining citizenship in Austria will, among other things, grant you a European passport to allow you to live and work freely anywhere in the EU. If you are a descendant of an Austrian Jew (or another victim of the Nazi regime) who fled the country to escape the Holocaust and its aftermath, you may be eligible for citizenship. Recent laws are making it easier for children and grandchildren of Austrian Jews to obtain citizenship.

More on new regulations granting citizenship

Since 2019, Austria has extended eligibility for citizenship to the descendants of any Jew who was a resident of Austria between 1933 and 1955 and who left the country due to fear of the Nazi regime or as a result of the Holocaust and the war (as well as non-Jews who were persecuted by the Nazi regime). It is not necessary to prove that your ancestor held Austrian citizenship, as non-citizen residents also qualify.

Moreover, unlike most Austrian naturalization processes, you will not be required to forgo your other citizenship nor would service in a foreign military (such as the IDF or the US Armed Forces) disqualify you. (Note, however, that active service members of a foreign military are ineligible to apply).

Applying for Austrian citizenship

Applying for this citizenship will require filling out paperwork in German. Any errors in your application can result in a denial of your request, and appeals are both costly and difficult. We recommend working with experienced lawyers, like those in our law office, who can properly translate your paperwork, understand Austrian requirements, and can help you get through this process efficiently.
