B1 Expert Visa Extension

This article addresses a B1 expert visa extension for foreign expert workers in Israel.

B1 Expert Visa Extension

Annual Renewals Up to Five Years

Israeli B1 visas are only valid for one year at a time.  These visas must be renewed annually if a company wishes to continue employing a foreign expert worker.  It is important to note that Israeli B1 visa renewals will generally not be issued after five years.

B1 Expert Visa Extension after Five Years

While what we indicated above is the rule — that B1 visas in Israel do not generally exceed five years — there are exceptions, and it is possible to ask for an extension.  We have seen Israeli foreign expert workers remain in Israel with a local or foreign company for up to ten years.  However, it does become much more difficult to apply for an extension after the first five years.

The Process to Apply for a B1 Expert Visa Extension

In order to apply for an extension, the company must submit the application six months before the visa expires!  This is very important to keep in mind, as missing the date can often mean missing the opportunity.

In order to obtain an extension for the B1 visa after 5 years of employment, the application will be sent to a special committee that deals with issues like these.  The committee will seek approval from other government ministries depending on your company’s area of specialization. For example, if your company deals with tourism, then the committee will seek the input of the Ministry of Tourism; if your company is an industry, then the committee will want to see the approval of the Ministry of Economy or the Ministry of Labor.  Finally, like the regular B1 application process, the committee will also seek the approval of the Israeli Ministry of Interior.

Our clients often ask us about the timeline for this process.  It can take up to six months to get a response with an extension or rejection.
