Living in Israel and have a Dutch passport that expires soon? This article explains in detail how you can apply for renewing your Dutch passport in Israel and what documents you will need.

Passport renewal – why and how?

Since March 2014, Dutch passports for adults are valid for 10 years, while Dutch passports for children below 18 are valid for 5 years. You can find the exact expiration date of your passport under the heading “geldig tot / date of expiry” on your passport.

Note that renewing your Dutch passport at the embassy in Israel will take about 3 weeks. Hence, it is recommended to start the application for a new passport at least three weeks before your current passport expires

What documents do I need to renew my passport?

The following documents are always required when you issue a new passport, regardless of your personal situation:

  • Dutch passport(s) and Dutch identity cards. If not yet annulled by the Dutch government, you must also bring your expired Dutch passport(s) and/or Dutch identity cards
  • Proof of legal residence in Israel – a valid visa issued by the Israeli Ministry of Interior or an Israeli passport. You are required to bring the original and a copy.
  • Passport photo that meets the criteria of the Dutch government
  • Filled out application form to request a (new) passport, referred to as “Paspoortaanvraagformulier” in Dutch.
  • You may have to bring additional documents, which depends on your personal situation. To make sure applicants bring the right documents, the Dutch government launched a webpage where you can fill out a brief questionnaire about your personal situation, after which you are presented with a complete list of all the documents you need. If you want to renew your passport in Israel, you can fill out this questionnaire.

Additional documents may include; the identity documents of your Dutch parents or a signed copy (in case you are below 18); a birth certificate and other passports (if you have multiple nationalities); marriage certificate (if you are married and want to change your name in your passport). Official documents such as birth and marriage certificates need to have an apostille stamp and are only accepted in the following languages: Dutch, English, German or French. For a full list of required additional documents, fill out the questionnaire mentioned above.

Where can I renew my passport in Israel?

You can renew your passport at the Dutch embassy in Tel Aviv. To issue your new passport, you must make an online appointment and visit the embassy in person. After you have provided all the right documents, it may take up to three weeks before your passport is ready to be picked up at the embassy. You may pick up your passport without an appointment on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9.00 to 12.00 hour in the morning. Fees for Dutch passports for adults and minors are updated on the government website.

What if I do not renew my passport?

Dutch citizens who live outside the Netherlands and do not renew their passport before expiration date may lose their Dutch citizenship. See our article on losing Dutch nationality for more information on this subject.

We hope this information will help you to have your passport swiftly renewed at the Dutch embassy in Tel Aviv. If you have any other questions on issues regarding Dutch citizenship or moving (back) to the Netherlands, we are happy to direct you to the articles we have written on these subjects.
