Translating a Population Registry Extract

Translation of population registry extract is required in cases such as marriage abroad, immigration abroad, and in cases where a person wishes to obtain foreign citizenship.

What a population registry extract contains: A population registry extract is an Israeli certificate that is issued by the Ministry of Interior via the Population and Immigration Authority which includes a person’s personal details: their full name, the names of their parents, their date of birth, their sex, their marital status, their address, their identity number, their religion, and other information.

The Ministry of Interior refers to this certificate as a Documentation Request Form from the Population Registry.

Anyone may request this certificate at the various Population Authority offices or via the Interior Ministry website. However, no one else may obtain this certificate for you unless they have a power of attorney signed by a lawyer and present it when applying, or unless a court ruling authorizes them to do so.

Translating a Population Registry Extract for Any Purpose

Below is a common example of when a translated population registration abstract is required:

Civil marriage: A couple who wishes to undergo a civil marriage abroad—in Cyprus, Paraguay, or El Salvador. These are usually couples who prefer not to get married via the Chief Rabbinate of Israel, or who are unable to marry in Israel due to belonging to different ethnic groups. The couple must present their population registry extracts as evidence of their marital status (i.e., single/married/widowed/etc.). The certificate must be translated into the language of the country where the couple is to be married, or into English, depending on the requirements of the institution which will be conducting the marriage.

The translation of the population registry extract into any language must be accurate and contain the exact accepted formal terminology that is equivalent to the source-language terminology appearing on the original certificate. Otherwise, the certificate will not be accepted. For example, to undergo a civil marriage in Cyprus, the documents that are submitted to the couple’s chosen municipality in which they plan to undergo the marriage ceremony may be translated into English, despite the fact that the mainly spoken language there is the Cypriot dialect of Greek.

The marriage certificate that the couple receives in Cyprus (or in any other country where they choose to be married) may be submitted to the Ministry of Interior after apostilization in the foreign country, for the purpose of registration and marriage in Israel, and also for the purpose of arranging the foreign spouse’s legal status in Israel.
