Have You Completed Your Medical Studies Abroad and Now Wish to Perform Your Internship in Israel? This Is What You Need to Know

Data from the Israeli Ministry of Health show that most physicians operating in Israel today have completed their medical studies abroad. The limit on the number of students who are accepted to medical schools in Israel, as well as other reasons, lead many Israelis to choose to study medicine overseas. Israeli medical students can be found in countries such as the Czech Republic (or “Czechia”), Romania, Slovakia, Italy, and Hungary. Most Israelis who successfully complete their studies abroad are interested in coming to work in Israel. To do this, they must receive recognition of their academic degree and take the governmental certification exams. This process may be fraught with bureaucratic obstacles and requires the help of a certified Israeli lawyer and notary. Below we explain about the process in detail.

A different article examines the situation practicing foreign doctors who immigrate to Israel and wish for their license to be recognized here.

What Are the Requirements for Taking the Governmental Medical Certification Exam?

Naturally, most Israelis who complete their medical studies abroad return to Israel and wish to perform their medical practicum there. To do this, they must first apply for a medical license. The application form is available on the Israeli Ministry of Health website, and must be submitted to the Ministry’s Medical Professions Licensure Division. The application must be submitted within 60 days before the governmental medical exam. If the application is not submitted on time or does not fully comply with the requirements of the Ministry of Health, it will not be considered.

The following documents must be attached to the application: A copy of the applicant’s ID card, including the appendix (ID slip), stating the applicant’s civil status (or, if the civil status is not included on the ID card—a certificate from the Israeli Ministry of Interior regarding the applicant’s Israeli legal status); a filled-out questionnaire for health professionals; a medical degree certificate from a recognized academic institution abroad, or a certificate of eligibility for a medical academic degree; an official certificate showing the start and end dates of the applicant’s academic studies; and a document listing the courses that were studied for the degree and the grades received in each course, divided by semesters.

Translation and Authentication of Degree Certificates and Other Official Documents—It Is Important to Follow the Required Procedures Correctly

The Ministry of Health requires sending true copies (certified copies) of academic certificates and documents that have been authenticated by a certified notary in Israel. If the documents are in a language other than Hebrew—which is almost always the case with foreign certificates—they must be translated by a certified translator in Israel. It is important to submit copies of the original documents according to the rules, as well as official translations that meet the requirements. Our law firm provides official authentication of documents, as well as notarial translation services that follow the conditions required by the Ministry of Health. We work with translators who translate into a wide variety of languages and with other law firms from many European countries.
