Applying for a Government Press Office Card in Israel

The Israeli Government Press Office (in Hebrew, Lishkat HaItonut HaMemshaltit) issues Government Press Office cards to foreign media, including reporters, correspondents, and other members of a media team.  The Press Office also provides both visa recommendations as well as work permits for press workers. The application for a Government Press Office (GPO) card can be found on the GPO website.  If you are applying for a Government Press Office card for the first time, you are required to pass a security review.

A Security Review for a Government Press Office Card in Israel

The security review for an Israeli press office card is relatively straightforward.  The request must provide accurate information on the media outlet as well as the person applying for the press card.  Essentially the security review checks that the person applying does not threaten the state’s security, meaning they never committed a crime in Israel, were never deported from the country, are not employed by a hostile nation, and so forth.  That said, the Israeli Government Press Office is able to issue press cards at its discretion, and there are cases where a foreign journalist does not necessarily pass all the security elements above, but they can be issued a press pass.

Qualifications to Apply for a Government Press Office Card in Israel

In order to apply for a Government Press Office card, the applicant must be affiliated with a media outlet that meets certain criteria.  Among others, these include ongoing activity for a minimum of two years and a readership measured by 10,000 newspapers sold per issue or 100,000 daily hits for an online outlet. Additionally, the media outlet must primarily cover news pieces, in contrast to opinion pieces, for example. Another qualification is that advertising can not comprise more than forty percent of the newspaper pages or online magazine web pages.  Furthermore, at least half of the articles published by the outlet must be written by employees of the media outlet.
