Media Outlet Qualifications

A foreign journalist in Israel can apply for a GPO card through the media outlet they are employed by.  In order to be considered a media outlet by Israel, the outlet must meet a number of qualifications. For example, the media outlet must have been operating for at least two years, have 10,000 papers sold per issue or 100,000 hits per day for online outlets.  Sixty percent of the publications must be media-related, at the very least, meaning advertising cannot be more than forty percent of the issue or online content. The media outlet’s staff must also produce at least half of the content, meaning most of the content cannot be outsourced to freelancers, etc.

The Application Process for a Foreign Journalist GPO Card

The application process for a foreign journalist in Israel to receive a GPO card is relatively straightforward.  You can fill out an application on the GPO website, or if you are affiliated with a media outlet, they can submit it on your behalf.  The GPO website lists some of what will be required for this.

Security Review for a Foreign Journalist in Israel

If this is the applicant’s first time going through the GPO process in Israel, the applicant will be subject to a security review.  This is fairly simple, examining that the foreign journalist in Israel has not committed any crimes in the country, has never been deported from the country, and does not work for a hostile state.

Visas and other GPO-Related Issues

If you need a visa for an international journalist in Israel, want to learn more about what to do when a GPO card is cancelled or suspended, or wish to appeal a GPO card rejection, see our resources on these topics.
