This article addresses driving with an expired license in Israel.  All issues regarding driver’s licenses and Israeli traffic law are overseen by the Ministry of Transport and Road Safety

Renewing A Driver’s License

Israeli drivers are required to periodically renew their driver’s license. New drivers need to renew their license after six months, then after two years, and subsequently every ten years. Drivers over the age of 70 need to renew their license every five years, and over 80 every two years (a process that includes a medical examination). It is important to renew one’s driver’s license on time so as to avoid driving illegally without a valid license, which is considered an act of neglect and contempt by the authorities.

Penalty for Driving with an Expired License in Israel

If you have been caught driving without a valid license, your penalty will depend on how much time has elapsed since it has expired. If it has been less than six months since your license has expired, you are likely to only receive a 250 NIS fine and will not be summoned to court unless you demand to be tried in order to argue for extenuating circumstances. If it has been more than six months, then you will be summoned to court. If it has been more than a year, then in addition to a fine, you may be required to take a driving course and pass a driving test. If it has been more than two years, you will almost certainly be required to pass a driver’s test, and other penalties may be levied by the court.

If you have been caught driving with an expired license and have been summoned to court, you should make sure that your license is properly renewed prior to your court appearance, which is essential in order to appeal for a reduced sentence. Moreover, it is advisable to contact a traffic lawyer to represent your case.
