We’ll describe the issue in depth, and also explain in general what notarial translation is and when it is required; but first we remind you that you are always welcome to contact us with any issue concerning notarized translation or various legal or administrative procedures with which you need assistance, and our team of experts will be happy to provide you with a comprehensive professional solution.Cost of notarial translation

Notarial Translation – What Is It and When Is It Needed?

When two parties participate in various administrative and legal proceedings (such as dispute resolution) within Israel, the documents that are submitted throughout the proceedings are usually drafted and written in Hebrew, which means that the receiver of these documents will understand the contents and will be able to recognize that the documents are formal and original.

However, such proceedings may take place between parties in Israel and in a foreign country, such as a business dispute between an Israeli business and a business from the United Arab Emirates (for example), in which the Arab-speaking and Hebrew-speaking parties each receive documents in a language that they do not know, with no way of understanding the contents of the documents or even knowing whether the documents are official and original.

So what do you do? Simple logic says that you should translate the documents. That is indeed the first step, but how can you know if the translation is reliable and if the document is original and official? Well, this is where the issue of notarial translation comes in. A notary public is a lawyer who has been certified to perform notarial work and, as part of their qualifications, is also certified to translate documents that require notarial translation or, alternatively, issue a notarized translator statement that the translation done by a third party is reliable and correct.

What items may require a notarized translation?

There are many different documents that require notarial translation, such as death certificates, marriage certificates, wills that are written in a foreign language and executed in Israel, certificates required for getting accepted to academic institutions abroad, such as a matriculation certificate and a certificate confirming the number of years of schooling, and Police Clearance Certificates (PCC) / Good Conduct Certificates required for working overseas.

In addition, it is very important to know that there are cases where apostillation is required for the notarial translation. Our firm will be happy to help you with this, as well, if you need it.

Before we talk about the costs of notarial translation, we would like to emphasize that not every translation must be notarized. Notarial translation is mainly required for documents that are being submitted to official bodies (such as courts, governmental authorities, regulatory agencies, etc.). Because notarial translation is usually more expensive than regular translation, it is very important to examine each case on its own merits and not make unnecessary expenses.

What Is the Cost of Notarial Translation?

Naturally, the cost of notarial translation varies depending on the document – the number of words and the complexity of the text. But it is very important to know that there is a document from 1977 that regulates the work of Israeli notaries and, among other things, sets the rates for translating documents. The rates are updated periodically in the File of Regulations:

As of 2024, the prices of notarial translation (not including 17% VAT) are as follows:

  • For up to the first 100 words (or fewer) – NIS 236
  • Each additional 100 words (or fewer), up to 1,000 words – NIS 186
  • Each additional 100 words (or fewer) exceeding 1,000 words, – NIS 86.

If you are uninterested in manually calculating the cost of a translation, we recommend our notary translation calculator.

It is important to understand that these fixed rates do not cover the actual translating of the document, for which every notary public may charge whatever price he sees fit. Unfortunately, may notaries public take advantage of the clients’ lack of knowledge and charge outrageous prices for doing translation work. We are committed to consistently providing you with quality translation at fair affordable prices, as well as advice and guidance on additional steps in any procedure in which you are involved.
