The cost of a Dutch passport and associated fees

When choosing to take out a new European passport or to renew one that has expired, it is important to consider the financial aspect as well. In many cases, people begin the process without knowing the expected cost of Dutch passport – and then face the choice between paying for unaffordable expenses or halting the process in the middle.

If you do not yet have a European passport but are eligible due to being a citizen resident of a European Union country, we definitely recommend taking advantage of this opportunity – it is a long term investment, at the end of which you will have a document which allows you to travel freely between European countries, live and work freely on the continent as a citizen for all intents and purposes, and even study for free in leading academic institutions. If you already have a passport which has expired, you should renew it as soon as possible (especially in the case of Dutch passports, where citizenship may be revoked from citizens who do not live in the Netherlands after the passport has expired), as it is an easier and shorter process than issuing a new passport.

To help you come prepared when you apply for a Dutch passport, we summarize here all the associated costs of issuing a new passport and renewing an existing one. If you wish to receive professional advice and assistance through either of these processes, our staff will of course be glad to be at your service, and you are welcome to contact us at any stage.

Cost of Dutch passport

The cost of issuing a new Dutch passport

Before we begin to detail the various costs entailed in issuing a new passport, we should note that we cannot give an exact final amount. This is because when it comes to issuing a new passport, each case is individual and therefore the costs may vary. There are people who already have all the required documents so they do not need to locate or issue new documents, and thus the cost will be lower, as opposed to other cases which require locating the documents through the Israeli or Dutch authorities. There are cases where the former Dutch citizen whose citizenship is the basis for the application has changed their name, and then it is required to issue a name change document and translate it, etc.

However, these are the criteria that will determine the final price:

  • Obtaining the documents: as mentioned, obtaining the passport entails submitting many different documents, and the most basic and important one is a document that proves that one of the applicant’s ancestors was or still is a Dutch citizen (a valid or expired passport, a Dutch military service certificate, a marriage license or birth certificate, etc). In addition it is required to present other documents such as the applicant’s Israeli passport (an example of a document that the applicant usually already has and does not require special action to obtain), birth certificate, marriage certificate, and additional documents in specific cases, such as the name change document we mentioned above. If the documents are not at hand, the applicant must contact the relevant authority and apply for them to be re-issued.
  • Notarized translation of the documents: the Hebrew documents from the State of Israel must be submitted to the Dutch authorities only after notary translation, and usually there are documents that require an apostille stamp as well. The cost of the notarization is fixed by the Israeli notary law, and the cost of the actual translation work must then be added. You can find detailed information on this subject here.
  • Lawyers’ fees: Finally, the price will be determined according to the fees of our attorneys who handled the application. The more complex an application is, requiring more complicated bureaucratic dealings, the higher the price will be.

For families who are all eligible for Dutch passports and applying together, It is important to note that as the number of family members goes up, the cost per application goes down. It is also important to know that the Dutch government charges fixed fees for issuing a Dutch passport, whether a new one or a renewed one (we will describe the most common costs in a moment) and detailed information on this issue can be found here on the website of the Dutch embassy in Israel.

Fees at the Dutch embassy for different actions

If you have asked yourself how much it costs to renew a Dutch passport, what the prices are for minors and for adults, and how these rates are determined – it is important to know that these all have fixed and uniform prices which are determined by the Dutch government.

The rates we bring here are current as of 2021 and it is important to note that they may change at any time, based on the information supplied by the embassy. Likewise, note that the prices we mention here are in euros, so the actual price in shekels may vary based on the exchange rate at any given time.
