This article addresses cancelling or suspending an Israeli press pass.  If you have already applied for an Israeli press pass and received it, there are a number of situations in which your press pass can be suspended or cancelled.  In the event you are interested in other press card challenges, see our article about appealing a press card rejection.

Cancelling or Suspending an Israeli Press Pass

If an individual with a press card either ends their employment or no longer abides by the Israeli Government Press Office’s rules, the press pass can be cancelled.  See the section below on the rules.

Suspending an Israeli Press Pass

Likewise, in the event that an individual with a press card no longer works with the media outlet through which they applied or no longer abides by the rules of the Government Press Office (GPO), the press pass can be suspended. The rules are listed below.

Some Rules regarding an Israeli Press Pass

Some of the rules and provisions for issuing an Israeli press pass include:

-Israeli press passes and Israeli press certificates are only issued to members of the media who have the proper permits or licenses to work in their profession

-Israeli press passes and Israeli press certificates can only be issued to those who have the correct permits and status to reside and work in Israel

-Israeli press passes and Israeli press certificates will not be given to those who have violated Israel’s security or who have provided inaccurate information in their application to obtain their press status

-Israeli press passes and Israeli press certificates will not be issued to residents or citizens of states that have enemy status with Israel (Note: Exceptions can be made to this rule with the permission of the Government Press Office if they determine there is no threat from the applicant.)

For more information on the qualifications and stipulations to apply for particular types of press cards, see our articles on types of press cards in Israel for full-time or part-time/temporary press workers

Challenging Measures for Cancelling or Suspending an Israeli Press Pass

In the event a media outlet seeks to challenge the Israeli GPO for cancelling an Israeli press pass or suspending an Israeli press pass, it is possible to do so.  An objection can be submitted to a committee in the GPO (by the media outlet in the case of an employee or by the individual in the case of a freelancer). Time is of essence, as an objection must be submitted to the Prime Minister’s office within 30 days after the press pass is cancelled or suspended.  The committee will respond within three months (or 90 days), and the media outlet or individual will be notified of the impending meeting three weeks in advance.
