Michael Decker

The translation of a certification of study and/or a transcript is a regular requirement for acceptance to study at academic institutions abroad. There is often a requirement for notarized translation of these study documents both for short term exchange student programs and also for degree programs at universities abroad.

Over the years, the number of Israeli students going to study in foreign countries is growing, with the requirements for acceptance changing from country to country. The translation of a certification of study/transcript is essential for being accepted to study in any foreign academic institution.

Certification of Study Translation

The types of documents that can be required as a condition for acceptance to studies:

It is important to remember that to be accepted to study abroad, one must usually meet certain requirements. The student must have good academic credentials, leave a positive impression both on a personal level and in their Curriculum Vitae, and to bring recommendations from the senior staff at their previous academic institution. Speaking the language of the target academic institution, if it is not English, is an important advantage.

Here we list some of the documents that may be requested as a condition for acceptance to studies abroad (in addition to the study approval certification and transcript translated into the target language) and that will require notary translation:

  • Certificate of Completion of a Specific Course.
  • Bagrut (High School Matriculation) Certificate.
  • Completion of Degree Certificate.
  • BA Degree.
  • MA Degree.
  • Professional Certificate – for those with previous academic background.
  • Registry Extract (to obtain a student visa).
  • Recommendation Letters (if they are not in the language of the institution where you have been accepted to study at).
  • Passport Copy
  • Marriage Certificate and Birth Certificates of children in the case of a student wishing to study abroad with their family.

Additionally, one should submit a copy of an Identification Certificate and sometimes also the translation of a Birth Certificate. It should be noted, that further documents can be required of students interested in combining study with employment in the foreign country.

Obtaining an Apostille stamp for Study Documents

A further substantial matter that should be checked before signing up for studies abroad, is whether the destination state is a party to the Hague Convention or not – this will impact the stamps/certification required on the documents (apostille stamp).

If the academic institution is in a state that is party to the Hague Convention, then there is a requirement of certifying the documents with an Apostille Stamp alongside the Notary Certification of the translated document by a certified notary. In instances where the state is not party to the Hague Convention, then one must obtain a different certification at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Every approval of study issued in Israel, including a Teaching Certificate, needs to obtain the stamp of the Ministry of Education in Jerusalem before can be verified with an Apostille stamp.
