Severity of Penalty for Driving without a Proper License in Israel

There are several different traffic violations, some minor and some very serious, that fall under the category of driving without a proper license. Accordingly, the penalties are variable depending on the exact circumstances of the violation. The least severe type of violation is driving with an expired license; more severe is driving a vehicle with the wrong kind of license; and most severe is driving a vehicle without ever having had a driver’s license or when one’s license has been suspended.Driving without a Proper Driver’s License in Israel

Driving with an Expired License

The severity of the punishment for driving with an expired license depends on how long the license has been expired. The punishment ranges from a simple 250 NIS fine (if it has only been a few months since the expiration of the license) to larger fines and a requirement to retake a driver’s test (if it has been a couple years since the expiration date).

Driving a Vehicle with an Incorrect License

If you have been caught driving a vehicle with the incorrect license (e.g. driving a truck when you are only licensed to drive a private vehicle), the punishment is more severe since it is considered a greater risk to public safety and often includes the suspension of one’s license for a certain period.

Driving after a License Suspension or Without a License

The most severe violation is driving a vehicle when one’s license has been suspended by the courts or without ever having been issued a license at all. Driving with a suspended license or with no license can result in a permanent revocation of one’s driver’s license and up to three years in prison, though this is usually reserved for repeated offenders. Punishments will also be particularly severe if you were found to violate other traffic laws while driving or if you were involved in a traffic accident.

Why You Should Hire a Lawyer

If you have been caught driving without a proper driver’s license, it is highly advisable that you contact an experienced traffic lawyer in Israel who can provide you with counsel and represent your case in court. Often an experienced traffic lawyer will be able to point out deficiencies in the prosecution’s case or shed light on extenuating circumstances surrounding the offense and thus get a more lenient ruling from the judge.
